Your monitor has the Error Message "Cannot Display Video Mode" or "Out of Scan Range Error" or has a Blank Screen After Installing a Recent Windows® Update and Restarting.
A recent Microsoft® Windows® update has been resetting the video resolution on certain computers. Unfortunately this leads to a computer that boots up with the user unable to see what's on the screen.
To resolve this issue, take the following steps:
A) Restart the computer in VGA mode in Windows XP
- Click the Start button and then click Turn Off Computer.
The Turn off computer window appears.
Click Restart, then click yes.
 |
NOTE: |
If the system is not displaying video, pressing and holding the power button until the system shuts down can be used to restart the system. |
- When the message Starting Windows... appears, press the <F8> key. The Please select the option: screen appears. (You can also start tapping the <F8> key once per second after your computer beeps during the POST sequence.)
- Use the arrow keys to highlight Enable VGA Mode and press the <Enter> key.
B) Lower the Display Resolution in Windows® XP
- At the Desktop, right-click on any empty area of the screen, and then click Properties in the menu that appears.
The Display Properties window appears.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Move the slider in the Screen Resolution section of the Display Properties windows towards Less until the resolution reads 1024x768 pixels.
- Click the OK button.
The Display Properties windows will disappear.
 |
NOTE: |
The screen may flicker or pause at a black screen for a few moments as it changes resolution. The computer may also prompt you to confirm you can see the screen after the resolution change. You only have 15 seconds to say yes before the resolution returns to the previous setting. |
- Click the Start button and then click Turn Off Computer.
The Turn off computer window appears.
- Click the Restart button and allow the system to restart normally.
